Our Research

50/50 Women on Boards tracks, analyzes, and publishes the gender composition of corporate boards in the Russell 3000 Index, representing 99% of all incorporated equity securities in the U.S.

Our research shows that out of the 2982 Russell 3000 companies nationwide, only 5% have gender-balanced boards. Recognizing the significant gap, our new campaign 50/50 Women on Boards advocates for gender-balanced boards.

We define “gender balance” as women holding half, one more, or one less than half of the corporate board seats.

Using our Gender Diversity Directory, you can research the gender composition of the Russell 3000 Index companies by state headquarters, sector, and rating. Based on the number of women directors, we rate each corporation as:

The Analysis area displays information for the current data set. We categorize companies in five ways, based on board composition:

  • GB GB = Gender-Balanced Boards
  • 3+ 3+ = three ore more women
  • 2 2 = Two women
  • 1 1 = One woman
  • 0 0 = No women

Published annually, our Gender Diversity Index (GDI) measures the percentage of board seats held by women on the Russell 3000 Index, and reports on progress by company size, state headquarters, sector and rating.

Past Reports

Reports from 2011 to 2017 were based on the 2010 Fortune 1000 list. After reaching the goal of 20% board seats held by women on the Fortune 1000, we enlarged the database of companies we track to the Russell 3000 Index. In 2019, we achieved our second milestone, with women holding 20% of the corporate board seats on the Russell 3000 Index.
